Description

Overview:

In light of the current geopolitical climate and Canada’s commitment to strengthening its economy and national security, the development of dual-use technology has become the focus of many conversations. Dual-use technologies are technologies that serve both civilian and military purposes and are seen as vital to economic stability, business innovation, and national defense.

With millions of federal dollars committed to advancing and commercializing dual-use technologies across various sectors, this Call for Proposals seeks to support New Brunswick researchers in the exploration of dual-use technologies for existing civilian and/or defense applications.

Objective:

This Call for Proposals seeks to support research projects that explore technological advancement for dual civilian and defense usage. Projects must align with federal government dual-use technology priorities, which include aerospace, ammunition, digital systems, maintenance support, personal protection, sensors, space, specialized manufacturing, training and simulation, and uncrewed autonomous system. Successful proposals will showcase collaborative partnerships that strengthen research outcomes and support the long-term success and scalability of the work.

The goal of the program is to fund leading, cutting-edge research that will:

  • Support the development, adaptation, or deployment of digital innovations as dual-use technologies that are between SRL 2-5
  • Establish and foster partnerships between public and private sector innovators to accelerate the development and implementation of dual-use technologies within the defense sector.
  • Leverage New Brunswick’s strengths in traditional defense engineering and manufacturing, while integrating advanced digital capabilities to drive modernization.

 Outcomes:

  • Researchers successfully carry out their research project and have the foundation required to further advance the project.
  • Additional funding and partners (industry and/or provincial and federal government) secured
  • Project findings have been recognized and implemented by relevant research users.

Leverage:

No leverage required.

Eligibility:

  • The research team must demonstrate experience in one or more of the following areas: aerospace, ammunition, digital systems, maintenance support, personal protection, sensors, space, specialized manufacturing, training and simulation, and uncrewed autonomous system.
  • The principal investigator must be employed at an institution listed in Appendix B of the ResearchNB Award Guidelines
  • The application must include at least one partner. The PI needs to provide at least one (1) letter of support from a partner or research user. The partner must be a legally constituted Canadian entity operating in the private, public, or not-for-profit sector. A research user refers to an individual or group who plans to implement or commercialize the resulting technology.

Eligible Expenses:

Funds can be spent on a wide range of costs associated with the project as described in the application. Please see our Award Administration Guidelines for an exhaustive list.
